Talkwish calls travel over the internet, so the quality of your connection matters more than anything else. A few small changes usually make a big difference.
Start with a steady connection
- Wi-Fi: stay close to your router, with as few walls in between as you can. If your router offers a 5 GHz network, try it.
- Cable: on a computer, a wired connection to your router is the most reliable option of all.
- Mobile data: look for a strong signal. Calls over a weak signal can break up.
- Share less: pause big downloads, cloud backups, game updates and video streams on the same network while you’re on a call.
A connection that’s fast enough for video is plenty for calls. What matters most is that it’s steady.
Use a headset
A headset or earbuds with a built-in microphone is the single best upgrade for calls on a computer.
- It stops your speakers from feeding back into your microphone, which is what causes echo.
- It picks up your voice and less of the room around you.
- Wired headsets avoid the occasional Bluetooth drop.
Keep your browser in shape
- Use the latest version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
- Close other apps and tabs that use your microphone or camera, like video calling apps.
- If calls start sounding worse over a long day, restart your browser.
- In the web app’s audio settings, check that the right microphone and speaker are chosen.
Fix common problems
- The other person hears an echo. Use a headset, or turn your speaker volume down.
- Sound is choppy or robotic. Your connection is struggling. Move closer to the router, pause other downloads, or try a different network.
- They can’t hear you at all. Check that you aren’t muted, that the browser can use your microphone, and that the right microphone is chosen. See Allow microphone access in your browser.
- There’s a delay. VPNs can add delay. Try the call with the VPN turned off.
Test it
Try another network, like a mobile hotspot instead of your home Wi-Fi. If calls sound fine there, the problem is the original connection, not your device. If problems continue, see Fix calls that don’t ring or keep dropping or email us.
